Today's session was focused on layering up the greenery and the sky, as well as adding more detail to that little area on the left hand side. What was really apparent was how differently the different colours handle. The green in the foreground was comprised of varying amounts of cobalt blue and cadmium yellow, which flows quite easily, but when I mixed the various sky colours - pastel pink, green and blue - the flow, perhaps because so much white and black had to be added, just wasn't as, well, 'flowing'. This is why there's more blending in the sky: if I tried to approach it the same way as the greens, which I initially did, it would either be too much on the dry side, which creates dry-brushing effects (something I try to avoid) or it would be too wet, and therefore too transparent. The result is that I'm forced to err towards the thick and dry approach and resolve it with blending, even though it's not my original intention. I don't like to hide paint strokes, but this technique probably does represent the photo of the sky that I'm working from.
I'm not pleased with how the how looks at this point, and obviously the concrete adventure will require some subtlety, but I am imagining it to appear more painterly than the sky currently does, but if this does happen, I may then need to alter the sky.
All in the hope of harmony.
